Buddha-full Commodities.

As I prepare to make my own collection of Buddha photos for my Etsy shop, I thought I’d browse and see some of the handmade Buddha items already for sale. As I’ve said before, whatever qualms I may have with the commodification of Buddhism as a “trend,” I’m not above beautiful objects.

Pray for the Ancestors by feransis feransis reminds me of the Ancestor Shrines we had in my backyard as a kid. My step-father lived in China for several years and this is one of the Chinese traditions that he brought back with him. Our shrines didn’t include specific photos so much as reminders of those who came before us, there was a little stone Buddha presiding over it and quite a lot of incense and candles.

Contemplate by Christopher Gracia is very, very serene. Very buddha-ful.

This icon, who I’d like to call Cowboy Hat Buddha, by Marie Wilson is one of the most charming Buddha pictures I’ve seen in a long time. I like thinking about this guy getting up and wandering over to his horse to rope up some dogies into enlightenment.

Saving the best for last – The Buddha Within by Jim Robertson is just… transcendentally gorgeous. The double exposure really is one of the advantages film has over digital and this is just so, so well done. I feel like I could get lost in this photo for a very, very long time and perhaps come out a little wiser for it.
